Re: Product with custom price at checkout

How can I set up a variant for custom pricing at checkout?

Hey all,

So our retail store is a little unique (not-for-profit dive shop) we have products (trips, custom orders) we sell and have non-inventory/inventory products set for these trips but we also need to have 'custom' prices at time entered for downpayments(deposits) or split payments. Is there a way to set up a 'variant' with $0.00 and then enter a custom price in the cart without making a 'Add cutom sale' as we would like to keep sales for accounting purposes grouped together under the product, for tax purposes as well as tracking purposes.

Unfortunately, variable or open priced products is not something Shopify seems to currently support. You can read a long thread about it here with some possible workarounds:

https://community.shopify.com/c/retail-and-point-of-sale/open-or-variable-price-item-in-pos/m-p/6403...

However, all the workarounds (like giving the item an artificially high price and then using an “Override price” discount each time) are pretty unsatisfactory. It’s not an issue for our store, but it clearly is for many others, and the general view is that this is something that Shopify should be addressing. Maybe they already are.

In the meantime, a quick search of the Shopify App store shows at least one possible solution. The “POS Variable Priced Products” app looks like it might do what you need (there may well be other apps too). Probably worth a look.

Thanks Ruby! We will take a look to see if it's something that will work for us. Otherwise we may have to harass Shopify to make this a feature if it's something people continue to ask for.

You can allow products with custom prices based on inputs or selections using the Custom Price calculator app https://apps.shopify.com/custom-price-calculator. The app allows you to create a calculator based on a formula and you can add it to your products. The app also has a bunch of pre-made templates that is pretty useful to get started.
Hope you and other find this useful
