Retail hardware, software, and Shopify Point of Sale
We are a butcher shop and deli. We use weight scales that print weight and price for the customer who takes it to the register to purchase. I'm hoping to move over to Shopify but how does this system handle that?
Hey HometownButcher,
There are essentially 2 ways to handle this:
The easiest way would be to sell specific weights of products. For example, you'd have a product called "500g of Ham" and then when you fulfill the order, you'd try to get the amount of meat as close to 500g as possible when you're preparing it.
The other way to handle this would be through a 'price per unit' app (like this one: https://apps.shopify.com/sell-by-liter-meter-weight), where you could set a 'per weight' price for each product you offer on your store (ex. 1kg = $25), and then customers could select a specific weight that they need and then the price would update according to what you have set as the base price (ex. 723g = ~$18.07). This would still require you to come as close as possible to the weight that the customer ordered, when preparing/fulfilling the order.
I hope the above helps! 🙂
Cheers,
Stephen

Another option I've found and will be implementing is the Price Embedded Barcode Scanner by Filljoy. I've been digging in to this and working with several app developers and this one is perfect for what we're doing. I encourage anyone else looking for this price embedded barcode from a weight scale to check it out.
Thanks for the reply Steven.

That's a great option (https://apps.shopify.com/scan-price-embedded-barcodes) if you're looking for POS solution. My initial response was based around trying to list products on a website. If you're looking for a POS solution, there are a few other options/apps available. The 'Sell by Weight' app (https://apps.shopify.com/sell-products-by-weight) is also good option to consider! 🙂

Do either of these apps work with the Shopify POS GO?
Price Embedded Barcode Scanner works on both POS Terminal and on POS GO
Are you using the Zebra 2D USB Barcode Scanner or the Socket Mobile 2D Bluetooth Barcode Scanner (S720) ?
We've come to the same solution.
The brick wall I've seem to come up against now is figuring out how to receive product that isn't a standard whole number quantity (i.e., 5.23 lbs of Raclette cheese). What has been your solution for this?
Hi @Farmstead, both of our apps below have some simple decimal inventory functionality that will allow you to receive product that isn't a standard whole number quantity. Your stock in Shopify will always show up as a rounded number, but within your app you'll be able to view and edit the decimal stock of a given product.
