Retail hardware, software, and Shopify Point of Sale
Hello,
The registers at our brick and mortar have Mac desktop computers. So if possible, we’d like to avoid also having an iPad there.
Does Shopify POS work on a Mac desktop computer?
Having trouble finding the correct answer. Thank you

Hello, @jlocklear146!
At this time, Shopify POS is not compatible with desktop computers. You can find the list of supported devices here: What devices does Shopify POS work with? We have point of sale hardware like device stands for iPad available, which may help streamline your setup in store.
I'm happy to submit a feature request to our developers on your behalf. If there's any other feedback you'd like to provide about why you would like to see POS on desktop (cost saving, space saving, etc.), please let me know. Thank you so much!

Has this been resolved? We are in the same boat and if we have to purchase iPad it’s an expense that we simply just don’t want.
No, the POS only works on iOS, so iPads and iPhones and perhaps some android devices. Likely to be remain this way.

Hi, @ErikaLundy!
I totally understand not wanting to invest in another device. Desktop devices are not currently supported for Shopify POS, but I'm happy to submit a feature request to our developers on your behalf.
The compatible devices for Shopify POS are listed here: What devices does Shopify POS work with? If at any point that list of devices change, we'll update the document to reflect the most accurate information. You can also keep an eye on the Shopify Changelog for updates.

Hi, I’m coming from another company.
I have bought all the equipment including desktop. Now I see that at this moment Shopify won’t be able to use desktop for Pos. I believe that by finding a solution for this matter Shopify will have more customer for Pos system. iPad are very small and the life of it is about 3 years. Please let me know if there is any solution for that. Thank you.

Thank you for sharing your feedback, @Dcache! I have passed this on to our developers. For the time being, Shopify POS works with the compatible devices listed here. I don't have a workaround for using POS on desktop, but I know that our developers will take your request into serious consideration.

I this ever going to be an option? iPads can sometimes be temperamental and it would be really nice to use the computer in case of emergency so we don't suddenly lose the ability to sell in store.
Hi, @evan8!
I'm not able to share whether POS will be available on desktop devices in the future. However, I appreciate your input and I will share your request with our developers.
Any changes to the platform will be listed in the Shopify Changelog. You can view updates specifically for POS by selecting the POS filter on that page.

I think this is not really an acceptabel solution its just the only one offered. I think it should standard be supported by desktop imac that kan download apps for iphone and ipad so you don't have the connection problems. Wifi isn't great everywhere aswell as bluethooth or other wireless connections also it leaves a lot to invest in for switching over to shopify
Hi @Floris1
Thank you for joining the thread and sharing your feedback on this. I will be sure it is included in our feedback to our developers for further consideration.

This would be useful for us as well. Most of our non-online orders are by phone so our staff take the orders using Mac Minis and the Shopify desktop back-end software. It would be nice to take the order and cc payment for the occasional walk-in using the same interface but with a cc reader vs trying to create the order using an unfamiliar iPad interface (we have a lot of products, but they are industrial with no barcodes so can't scan them in). We can use the desktop interface now for walk-ins, but we have to take down all of the cc billing info in addition to typing in the cc number/date/cvv. We would like to just just tap or swipe the card. Walk-in customers think it's strange to give out billing address info and have someone take a record of their card number.

I appreciate you sharing your experience, @dwebs. Have you considered using a card reader with the Shopify POS app on a mobile device (iPhone or Android)? I understand that this is similar to the iPad in that it's not the same interface as the desktop version you're familiar with, but it would help you process in-person transactions.

Hi! I realize I'm late to the game here, but I have just figured this out for myself. I use the app "Easy Scan" for A LOT of my day-to-day tasks and have learned that you can use it to create orders with a scanner! It has been very handy.
Thanks for sharing this suggestion, @sierramarie4!
