We Dont use POS, We all work from desktops, and work out of the web version.  Is there a way to use a Card reader instead of manually ringing someone up?

Hi @dfw-atv,

Could you please explain more about what you are looking for here? Do you have interactions with customers in person? I ask this as without having the physical card, you will need to manually enter in the customer's card details regardless of whether or not you're using a card reader.

If you are interacting with customers in person and wish to use a card reader to process sales, you will need to use the Shopify POS app if you wish to use one of our card readers. An alternative option would be to use a card reader provided by a third-party payment processor and simply mark the orders as paid within the Shopify admin.

Thank you for your Response.  Let me clearify.

I dont work out of Shopify POS.   I use Shopify on a Desktop, and often key in lots of Custom Products as I'm sitting with the customer. Its very hard for me to do from an iphone or ipad, as I need a PC for other Research and looks during these sales.  At the end We ring up the order and key in the Credit Card Manually.    I'd like to be able to have a card reader for this.

Hi @dfw-atv ,

Since you have the customer in front of you, the options here would be:

1. I'd assume you are using Draft Order? If yes then I think what you are doing now is showing them the screen to key in their card details once you have confirmed the draft order?

2. Similar to 1, you can also invoice customer once draft order is completed. That way, they can also pay it online through their phone.

3. The more manual way which you might be looking for is to go and apply for a terminal from your local payment gateway provider. It would be a separate device from Shopify.

You can allow your customer to make the payment on the terminal, and then manually key in the payment details into Shopify once they are done and also mark as paid.

It's not possible to use the card reader and automatically update the order paid status if you are not using Shopify POS.

Thanks for the clarification, @dfw-atv!

I want to confirm what's been stated previously in this thread—you'll need an external card reader in order to process transactions this way. The reader won't connect to Shopify, but you'll be able to collect payment on the reader and then manually mark your order as paid.

Since Shopify's card readers are currently only compatible with Shopify POS, I'm happy to submit a feature request to our developers on your behalf. I can't guarantee when and if a card reader might be compatible with Shopify via desktop, but I understand that this would be easier for you and I'll be sure to share your use case with our developers for consideration in future updates.
