Need customers to enter in their model number before ordering

I have Shopify Basic and I sell personalized stickers. I need customers to be able to enter in their model number when ordering because there are many different kinds. This cannot be chosen from a drop down menu as there are simply too many to catalogue them all. It can be either part of the product or the checkout process. Any ideas? First time using Shopify

If you use a theme from our theme store, you can utilize order notes for this. Our themes come with order notes that appear on the cart page where customers can enter any information relating to their order. We have a guide for enabling order notes on this page. 

If you want to take the next step and provide a better customer experience, you also have the option to add a text box to your product pages with the use of an app such as Variant Option Product Options. This offers a more seamless order experience as customers can enter the model number on the page where they can find the information about the stickers. Feel free to consider this option and also check out other similar apps to find the one that suits your online store the best!

Summer, thank you for your reply. Setup is going okay. I'm new to Shopify. My client has some odd requirements, like a one time setup fee for custom designs, then after that, it goes back to regular price. I'm not sure how to associate a design with an account, and only charge them once based on the design. All in all though, it's been simpler than using WordPress.

You can try the MultiVariants-Bulk Order app. MultiVariants - Bulk Order app has a text input feature. Your customer can choose the variant and input the model number with it.
