New fuzzy search on POS makes Shopify completely useless

Looking to see if anyone else is experiencing this...

Shopify pushed out a POS app update last week that adds fuzzy search when looking for a product. This has made the entire checkout useless for me, as I use a barcode scanner to scan the SKU into the product search box, which until last week brought up the only matching product. Now, a new 'feature' has been added that brings in everything that is close to it. I have thousands of products in my brick and mortar store, and I can no longer check customers out because I am unable to find the product in the massive list that comes back. SKUs are unique by definition - why was this done????

I have reported this to customer support, and all I got was 'It is a new feature that is working properly'. Some product manager did not think this one through.

After spending a lot of money on Shopify's hardware POS, I am now having to look for another platform. Anyone have suggestions?

Hey, I completely understand your frustration ,this issue also threw us for a loop last week. We rely heavily on barcode scanning with unique SKUs to process sales quickly, and the fuzzy search update in POS made everything more time-consuming and difficult. It definitely disrupted our checkout process.

Like you, I reached out to support and got a similar response, but I didn’t want to switch platforms after investing so much in Shopify hardware. So, I did some research and was able to find a solution with the help of a Shopify expert. It involved a custom POS app extension (available if you're on POS Pro) that forces exact-match logic when scanning SKUs, bypassing the fuzzy search for barcode inputs.

It took a bit of effort to set up, but it worked for us and got everything back to normal. If you’re open to it, I’d be happy to share the contact info for the expert who helped us. They were fantastic in troubleshooting and getting us back on track.

I know it frustrating but it's actually nothing to worry about

I can not get anything to scan into the search bar on POS, even if I tap the search bar before scanning. it just scans to checkout

Shopify, please answer me this:

Do you have a success story about a company with at least 1MEUR revenue using your POS? Even one?

Do you consider making a quality product that is suitable for production use?
