ShopifyPOS barcode reader can't deal with 13 digits

Although I can enter in a 13 digit barcode into a product, the camera scanner want's to either drop the first digit if it's a zero to give me a 12 digit barcode, or drop the last digit. Why? 13 digits is the EAN 13 standard so why is it deciding to drop digits?
