Retail hardware, software, and Shopify Point of Sale
Good evening all,
I am in a bit of a unique situation when setting up my Shopify POS.
I am currently undergoing a transition from NCR POS to Shopify POS, though I am having an issue with using a 3rd party payment terminal.
I received a Shopify Tap & Chip reader along with a few other hardware items, but it seems as though the tap and chip reader is only usable to Shopify payments, which the company will not being switching to due to nearly being 2x the cost in fees / rate.
Is there a workaround for being able to use Shopify POS with a card reader that speaks to the Shopify app? I am being told that I will need to mark the sale as paid in the shopify app, exit to a different app and enter the sales amount to complete the transaction. If anyone has a solution, Thanks in advance!
Hey, @Ztet.
Thanks for reaching out and posting this question.
I understand that you're looking to use a third-party payment terminal with Shopify POS and I can confirm that this process does involve marking the orders as paid on Shopify. It's important to note that the payments aren't processed through Shopify when using a third-party terminal so you wouldn't be able to use our card reader or process payments through Shopify's checkout. However, before marking the order as paid on Shopify POS, you can also process the payment first in order to make sure that the payment went through as well. If you'd like to learn more about custom payments or external terminals, then you can learn more about that here: Activating custom payments for the Shopify POS app.
That being said, since you're a new member of the Shopify Community, then I'd love to hear more about your experience so far and share some resources to help you get started. What kinds of products are you selling? Do you have a marketing plan prepared for your store?

Are there any plans to have a Shopify Terminal that can be programmed to be used with a third party processor but still use Shopify as a gateway? Therefore if you're not using Shopify Payments you can still not have to "type" the amount into a third party terminal. Looking to avoid employee errors by mistyping.
Hey, @selfevolve.
Thanks for joining the thread and posting this question.
I understand that you're looking for a way to use a third-party payment gateway with Shopify hardware. While we don't have any plans at the moment, I'd be happy to this suggestion as a feature request with our development team. If Shopify moves forward with any changes or updates in regards to supporting third-party gateways on our hardware, then we'll be sure to announce them on the Shopify Changelog.

Same question. I need to integrate 3rd party seamlessly into the app. Just signed up for plus - my sales rep knew that we would need to use 3rd party processing and gave the impression there would be no issues. Any progress on the feedback submitted? Thanks!
Hi @mmeraz,
Thanks for adding to this thread.
While I can completely understand the impact, this feedback has been shared with our Developers. We wouldn't however, have any insight on when and/or if this update will become available. For the time being, you can continue to use the workaround shared above. This you to ensure the payment was successfully processed before marking the order as paid. For updates and changes made to the platform, you can refer to the Shopify Changelog.
Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.
