Hey there, @Mldyjoy. Jumping in for @Emily here as they're away for the next few days!

If you're operating out of the U.S, and will be processing transactions within the U.S, then there is no better option than our own Shopify Tap and Chip Reader! I've included a link to the reader for you here. The nice thing about the reader is that it connects to your Shopify Payments payment method, allowing you to get set-up incredibly quick, and begin selling.

Of course, you do have the option of external card readers, such as Sqaure, for example. We have a help doc here that goes over how you'd process a card payment using such a reader. Since these external readers are third party, you'd have to purchase that from the service, open an account with that service, and the set up a custom payment method within your Shopify Store for that service, too. Instructions on how to do that can be found on that help doc page I shared!

What sort of festivals are you planning to sell at? My SIL sells at conventions and festivals all of the time, so it's always nice to find another large event seller!

Hey again, @Mldyjoy. Thanks for following up with your question!

If you opt to go for one of the Shopify Card Readers, then the fees associated with that reader are the same fees you have in relation to the subscription plan you have with Shopify. You can refer to this page here for more information about the credit card fees you can expect if you go for a first-party reader that uses Shopify Payments to capture payments.

If you decided to go for a third party reader, then you'll want to check with those third parties to see how much they charge for credit card processing. Shopify does charge a 3rd party transaction fee based on your Subscription Plan (you can see the rates via the page I linked) but that fee is on top of whatever the third party wants to charge you.

You must purchase a card reader that's approved by Shopify. You can head over to their Hardware website and purchase on there.

I own a machine, which I have used for my previous credit card processor (Chase).  It's a Verifone Vx520.  Can that be reprogrammed to become a Shopify terminal?

Pretty sure you can't. Terminals like that are programed and locked to it's payment processor (chase). Plus, I'm pretty such Shopify systems won't connect to a terminal as such. If you want to process using Shopify payments, you must use one of their bluetooth card readers. You can use 3rd party bluetooth readers but you will have to process your payments through that readers payment service and not Shopify.

You are able to use a third party card reader alongside Shopify POS to facilitate transactions. However, as third party readers aren't directly supported by Shopify POS, the way it would work is that you would facilitate that transaction with your third party reader, which would be using a third party payment gateway. Then, you would keep a record of that transaction within Shopify POS. We have a help document here that goes over that information.

Essentially, using a supported, Shopify Card Reader allows everything to integrate very smoothly, and with Shopify's in-house payment processor, Shopify Payments. You won't be able to 'reprogram' the third party reader to integrate with Shopify Payments, but it is still equipment that you can use to facilitate transactions.
