Retail hardware, software, and Shopify Point of Sale
Anyone using this?
I understand Customer View app has to run on an Android device & will work with iPad being used as POS terminal, but looking for stand ideas & suggestions on what Android tablet others are using.
Thanks!
We are using the Lenovo Smart Tab M8 for Customer View. The app is working well for us, however we would like to see a few improvements:
1) In landscape mode, we are unable to display "Welcome to Philadelphia" as the character count on Philadelphia is apparently too long and it separates the word onto two lines when there is adequate space on the screen. The word "Philadelphia" shows on one line in portrait mode, but not in landscape mode which is odd as there is more room horizontally in landscape. Philadelphia is 12 characters long.
2) When there's a Shopify POS on iPad update in the App Store, the Customer View on Android will disconnect which requires reconnection after the update. It would be nice to pair the two devices in another manner, rather than QR Code.
3) The Lenovo tablet only charges when connected to the smart dock in Landscape orientation, so we are unable to display our name "Philadelphia" in Portrait orientation while keeping the device charging.
Here's additional information on the Smart Tab M8 - Iron Grey | Lenovo US.

Does that stand come with it?
We've got one that looks pretty similar, I'm not normally an Android guy, but it also seems like there's a lot of excess garbage that comes with it, kinda like a home version of Windows.
Any suggestions on cleaning it up or even downloading a 'cleaner' copy of the OS to reinstall?
How often do updates come out?
That's pretty strange, splitting 'Philadelphia' into two lines in landscape mode, too! If you change the font size does it matter or could you make a jpg of the text & load it on to the Lenovo?
Fortunately enough, after creating this post, I removed the text completely, saved with no text, and then typed it back, and the second time it correctly formatted for Landscape Mode. I'm thinking as we initially displayed the tablet in Portrait Mode that the font size stayed consistent for Landscape. Hard to understand.
As far as the Android software on the tablet, you see a Lenovo logo during boot up, however the tablet runs very clean and there is little to no "bloatware" installed. I would never consider trying to replace the OS that came with the device. Would definitely recommend the Lenovo Smart Tab M8 for Customer View. Only downside to the tablet is you cannot charge and dock it in portrait mode, only landscape. The charging pins are only on the bottom of the landscape orientation. Hope this helps.
Yes, the stand does come with it and it's weighted. An excellent value from Lenovo in my opinion.
Is there a way to have the customer view run at startup?
Also, I'm guessing is I leave everything on, they should stay connected, but are there any options for having thing automatically reconnect if there's a disruption?
Hello,
Sorry to be asking on on older post but I was hoping you wouldn't mind me asking whether the powersaving options be disabled completely on this device? To maintain the connection better.
Our current device has no option to completely disable it and connection drops every 30 mins.
Rather annoyingly.
Do you experience many issues with the connection dropping out much?
Thanks in advance
Hi there, sorry to jump on an old thread, but we're just migrating over to Shopify from Lightspeed (Vend) and are looking to integrate our customer-facing POS display setup. Can you confirm 100% that the Android "Customer View" tablet can interface with the main iPad POS tablet? My Shopify support person said no, but this thread seems to suggest otherwise.
We want to be 100% sure since we have $3,000 worth of iPads and POS equipment on order and may need to cancel. 😅....🤢
Thanks heaps.
Hello, it is very strange that Shopify would tell you that. I wonder if perhaps, the Shopify Support agent was nervous about saying yes because of the money involved and played it safe by saying no.
I can confirm that we use an Ipad as our main POS and have the 'Customer View' app running on a separate Android Tablet. We are able to connect the customer view app via scanning a QR code and it works fine for us.
I wouldn't like to potentially cause you any issues with your purchases by saying to ignore them, I can only say that it works for us.
I would recommend you double check with them again, ask for a different opinion and point towards this thread.
