Retail hardware, software, and Shopify Point of Sale
Evening all 🙂
This may seem like a stupid question, but I can't seem to find the answer I am looking for on google.
I am currently using an Android tablet for my POS, I have recently found out that it's best to use a iPad.
I want to know if a "standard" 8th gen 32gig iPad tablet will work fine?
I don't want to buy something I don't need, and I also don't want to go cheap then end up having to upgrade again.
Thanks in advance for the help 🙂
Regards.
Hey there, @Vaporworx!
Thanks for reaching out to the Shopify Community today with your question! This is a great place to come by anytime you have questions about anything Shopify-related!
I took some time to speak to our Retail Specialist team about your question and I've collected some information for you!
Short and sweet! That iPad should be able to do the job for you just fine! Storage restrictions are always user and device dependent, as well, so this is something to be mindful of! As long as your iPad's memory doesn't get loaded up with multiple applications or photos for example, it should work for you for a good amount of time.
You should be good to go with your selection here! We have some additional information on POS device requirements on this page here if you want some further confirmation!
Just reply to this thread if you have any additional questions!

Hi Imogen,
We (sweetieshoppie.co.uk) are also looking for a good epos system. We have already purchased the wisepad card reader (This fell far short of what we need!). I have researched Mpop and not to sure about this either! Can we not use standard Epos systems and integrate them?
Hey there, @nbid77! Thanks for following up on our thread here! It's good to meet you!
We actually have a document here that goes over all of the support POS hardware that you can use with Shopify POS. When it comes to mPop, you would be able to integrate their printer and cash drawer, but not their readers.
Third party readers can be used in conjunction with Shopify POS, but they would need to be set up externally to process payments, as Shopify POS only works with Shopify Payments. You can use a third party reader, have the transaction go through the third party payment provider, and then use Shopify POS to keep data of those payments using a 'custom payment method'. We have more information on that here.
If you're considering giving Shopify Point of Sale a try in a larger capacity than using just a single reader, or if you're thinking about a fully equipped retail set up, then I suggest you look to speak to our Retail Specialists! You can reach out to them in one of two ways:
1.) You can use this link to access our 'POS Go' page (POS Go is our newest POS offering) and there is a button you can hit there that says 'Talk to Sales.' This can help you get in touch with our Sales Team, who can teach you more about Shopify POS!
2.) You can download the Shopify POS app, and then navigate to the hamburger menu (it's a menu with 3 horizontal lines on the bottom left) to access some contact options for our Retail Support Team!

Hi @Vaporworx and community,
We are looking into POS hardware requirements now and are attracted to the Android solutions due to the big difference in tablet costs. I have been told by Shopify that there are absolutely no differences between the iOS and Android app. @Vaporworx could you let me know what it was you found the iPad does better than the Android tablets? What has been your experience on the Android tablet so far?
