Why is Shopify removing "Price Override"??

I got an e-mail this morning saying in the upcoming release, Price Overrides will be removed. Why do such a thing? I have to use this feature often for special circumstances. Sure you can do the same thing but not as efficiently as just a simply price change. This slows down productivity.

Hello @Skivvies

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback regarding the removal of the Price override feature from Shopify POS. We’ve read the feedback and understand the importance the ability to apply discounts quickly and accurately are to your business. It is clear that while this update is on the product path to better discounts, removing it has been an inconvenience and we sincerely apologize for that.

We recently released the Price after discount field in the Custom Discount feature for POS to help set the desired end price automatically. The feature shipped in version 9.2 of the POS app and has since released to all merchants this week. This update is an important part of the work we are actively pursuing to improve the overall experience of discounts in Shopify POS.

I’m so tired of having to explain to my staff why we have another weird work-around bc Shopify does another bizarro move. It’s already so embarrassing to say well our card readers and scanners only connect 1/2 the time bc they locked the pairing so we HAVE to buy their equipment.

How is everyone working around this?? We just started using Shopify POS and we have so many products that we need price override for. I know there’s some app that can do it (I forget the name of it) but any other way you’re managing?

Calculators at the cash. Unfortunately we have not found a workaround for this. We offer special pricing that we don't want to show online for over 300 products, so this is truly a pain.

We got the app, POS Variable Priced Products, and it's exactly what we need. $12/month. Sucks, but it would suck more without it.

Has the person that came up with this dumb idea been fired yet?  So we can get this back.  This is the dumbest idea ever!

Hi all. In the latest changelog for the app (Android), I'm reading: New field for "amount" custom discount allows POS staff to set the desired "price after discount". The custom discount amount is automatically calculated.

From what I understand it would be an acceptable solution, similar to what price override was. However I've update the app on our test device and no such "new field" seems to be there, nor at line level or cart level. Anyone has had any luck with this new update?

Even if this is the case, it makes discounts irrelevant from a reporting level.  Also, receipts show discounts that are ambiguous given that prices are constantly discounted.  This is still intolerable.  Why we can't just enter a price is beyond me.

@Shopifywas an online platform first, and a POS second. They rapidly put together a POS but didn't take the time to research good quality POS systems before they went live. They still 'think' like an online store system, and don't understand the realities of in store brick and mortar POS needs. They rolled out to many countries prior to perfecting the existing systems. Then they put out a POS migration sales document, trying to convince people to use shopify POS, but in reality, had I used that document before using Shopify, I would have known not to switch. I don't know if they even realize how unlike a proper POS this system is. I spoke with Lightspeed again the other day out of frustration and was asking questions (ie: how refunds work as one easy example) and they kept saying 'of course it works like that'. I laughed and laughed! Because my "POS" from Shopify doesn't work like a regular pos. Questions we didn't think we had to ask about functionality are now standard when we interview new systems we hope will be a match.

I have not been able to locate the "Price after discount" tab in any of the  "Add Tile" subheadings.  Could someone please provide guidance on where this feature can be found on Shopify POS?

I have also tried finding it through selecting the item in the cart, to no avail, and selecting an item from the list, also no joy.  I cannot find the feature anywhere within the Shopify POS app.

I am currently running:

- App Version 9.4.0

- iPad Version 17.3.1

I can’t locate it either, not on iPad nor iPhone

Whoever marked this as a solution must work for Shopify. It's not on our POS. This company .... I can't even.

Thank you for reintroducing this feature, it works perfectly!

The only note I will add is that our staff did not know that it existed, because on iPads the $ discount field gets auto selected to type in to, and the keyboard input that pops up fully covers the price after discount field. You have to minimize the keyboard to see that this field exists. Not sure if this helps anyone who still can't use this tool.

Yes thank-you that is very helpful!!

I wish that was it. It is still not rolled out to us.

Hi NDyer,

Our POS staff routinely need to set the price HIGHER than the price in Shopify. There is no way to do this in the app. I have to use a third party app but that has its own downsides. Is allowing the price to be set higher than the price in Shopify on the POS roadmap?

Thank you.

Thanks for following up, @computergiant!

While we do not have any public information to share on whether or not this will be introduced, we do appreciate your feedback and will be sure to share that back with our product development team for future consideration.

Warm regards,

Why is this not available on our POS ?

Fishrider

Yes, but you guys already had the feature and then removed it.  Being able to override a price is just a normal function of a POS.  It should by the VERY FIRST thing you guys should add back in.  Literally, drop everything else and have the development team get this done.  It shouldn't be that hard considering the API does allow for third party PAID software to do this.

Not being able to override a price causes a cascade of issues from the front end checking people out to reporting problems on the back end.  The work around for overriding pricing makes the problem worse because discounts become irrelevant as a reporting tool.  Seriously, step it up Shopify.

@Oliviaplease correct your answer above. This is not available on all pos systems. We have pro and have paid for years. You keep removing functionality from our pos! At the very least correct your answers in the forums.

So, this helps on the math end of things, but it doesn't really SOLVE the underlying issue.  For products that inherently have variable pricing what is work around?  Set the price at 1 million and then type in the price after.  That makes for some terrible reporting.  Our work around is to have several variants with that you choose from that may be close to the price and then discount one of those.  The problem still remains that you are discounting an something and not just changing the price at the time of sale.  It makes no sense.

This is ABSOLUTELY NOT an acceptable solution.  First of all, it does not exist.  I cannot find this function anywhere in our iPad Shopify POS.  Secondly,  this still does not address the price adjustment of a particular item in its line item status.  Prices do not always go DOWN.  they need to be able to go up at times as well and be tracked on that same line item.  This is not a solution at all.  This is a cop-out.

I've clicked on the 'report' feature for that shopify staff member's post but the moderators are not removing it or fixing it. THIS feature HAS NOT BEEN IMPLEMENTED on all POS systems. We pay full price and always have, and still have no functional system.

We had some zero priced items show up and staff need to add the price on the ticket and can’t do that now !  Without a way to add price it’s a mess.  We don’t want to get them to do an open sale as it affects inventory.  What now ?

Shopify should just go back to the way it was. The same way that every other POS system does it. Just a simple price override is all we needed.

you will sell the item in order to keep the inventory on track then use the "ADD CUSTOM SALE" to input a price.  This is a terrible work-around for a simple feature but it is unlikely that SHOPIFY is listening and less likely that they will ever relent and give us back the functionality of the software that we originally purchased.  This "FEATURE REDUCTION" is unfortunately what we all have to look forward to in the new world of "SOFTWARE AS A SERVICE" industry.  They have us by the nut$ with no incentive to change their business model. As a generation, we are going to all have to learn to wrap our heads around NOT OWNING the thing we are paying for.  CD's, cars, television sets, tangible ownership.  Now, we pay for a "license to use" and this license does not provide us with any redress of grievances with regard to FEATURE REDUCTION.  It sucks, and it is inevitable.
