Checkout 'Enter Discount or Giftcard Code' Webhook / API

Been fiddling around with the APIs and I am in need of guidance.

When a user inputs a code into the above Discount & Gift Card input field, what are all of the possible things that 'code' can be? I do know it can be a gift card, and I have tried using a discount and price rule. Is there anything at all it can be? I'm not interested in using Shopify Gift Cards and the Price Rules are too limiting for me; hopefully there is something else! Does anyone happen to know?

In an ideal world, I could have a webhook that would receive an input from a user, read the code and respond with a discount object that shopify would understand and handle like normal. Please tell me something like this is possible!
