Confusion regarding AppBridge and Polaris design guidelines

I'm try to integrate existing application to shopify. We already have admin UI and plan to use it for Shopify. So the question is:

Does the Polaris guidelines is a strong restrictions? Can we just connect our admin UI to Shopify admin via iframe, or should we completely rewrite it to use Polaris design guidelines and AppBridge?
