How to update tracking & carrier info with API

I have a Shopify store. Orders will be fulfilled from our warehouse. I have been able to get the orders from the Shopify store/admin, create the orders in our system. When the orders are pick/pack/shipped I need to send the tracking & carrier info to Shopify to update the order. Can someone please explain the process that is required to do this? 


Does a fulfillment record need to be created for the order? If so can it be done in that same admin API REST request to pass in the tracking number & carrier info? T
