id vs. inventory_item_id on variants?

What is the difference between the id and the inventory_item_id?  One of them should be a unique ID for this particular item.  They seem to be different values.  I understand the the product_id is essentially the parent of the variations, but I need to know which of these values is the unique ID for the item.
