Is it possible to erase customer personal data via an API?

Hi,

I can see a post from last year that it is only possible to erase personal data for the merchant using the admin user interface, i.e. it is not possible via liquid or the API.

Is this still the case?
I can see you can delete a customer via the API, but this only removes the customer from the customer list, you can still see customer data on the order.

Customers are requesting this and I want to create an automated process for it to make my life easier.
