Any Product Options apps and Bulk Discount apps that are compatible with one another?

I'm having an issue with my store where if someone chooses product options that alter the price of an item in the same order with items that trigger a bulk discounter app (I've tried a few of them to solve the problem with no luck) the product options charge is not applied to the order.  I asked the Product Options app developer why this is and they said that it was a known issue but that the only solution was to not use the other app.  

So my questions are: 

1) Technically speaking, why do these apps conflict and not work together? 

2) Is there a Product Options app (or specific set of apps) that I can use to circumvent this issue?  

Thanks in advance for any help!  It's certainly not ideal to email customers after they place an order asking them to immediately pay more for the product options they selected.
