Best practices for preventing access to theme app extension blocks?

Working on a theme app extension, and wondering what is best practice for preventing access to the blocks in the theme editor, or showing in the online shop that the app needs to have an active subscription.

Is it possible to use ScriptTag to check for subscription status, and insert a notification in the online shop when necessary. Is there a better way about this?
