Google analytics data is not updating for shopify checkout page

As far as I understand, there has been an update a few months ago to the checkout page to using shopify's checkout extensibility that makes it harder to set up google tag manager in checkout page, unless you have shopify plus. However, through google analytics and the built in app (Google and Youtube), there is a way to connect the google analytics property to shopify. I have done this before and I have had data sync from shopify to google analytics. By mistake, I noticed that there are two google analytics properties connected to the domain and I disconnected one of them, which was not syncing anyway. I don't know if that is related to the issue, but I thought I would mention it.

 

I also tried using google tag manager and adding the tags in the theme.liquid file, but when setting up the tag's paramaters and values, I don't see variables for the value of things like transaction id. I assumed that is because of the checkout page update.

 

I tried disconnecting and reconnecting the google analytics property in the shopify admin, but that didn't work. I tried playing around with the tags and so forth, but the purchase event doesn't get triggered when an order is placed through tag assistant for both google analytics and google tag manager. I also waited 24 hours to see if there was just a delay in the data sync, but that didn't fix things, also it wouldn't explain why all the data for non-checkout is working fine in GA4.

 

I set up a custom pixel app, but I am not sure how to connect it to GA4. I am mostly just looking to fix purchase data, then we can set up more tags for checkout page through the custom pixel app. Please let me know if you have relevant advice with specific steps to fixing this.
