App reviews, troubleshooting, and recommendations
I need to find a way to add a 2.7% Surcharge for Credit Card Orders or PayPal orders.
I run a wholesale site so adding 2.7% to my price wont help me much as my competition will look like they are cheaper than me. At the same time since i'm working with such small margins I can not eat the credit card fees or i will loose too much profit. Any recommendations?
Hi @jcastro,
Nick here from Shopify. Really good question!
As it stands it is not possible to add a credit card surcharge to any of your store orders within the Shopify admin. There is however a couple of workarounds which you can apply to achieve this, one of which comes in the form of an app and the other being via your shipping rates. Let's take a closer look into both of these methods:
Hope this helps!
All the best, Nick

Hi Nick,
Looks like this is a feature a lot of merhants are looking for. Should be something that is native in Shopify for the merchants.
Peter
I agree this should be native for all merchants 😪
Especially if your product price is around the 2k/3k for a single product then a 2.7% will make the whole deal a no go for a merchant like me 😓
I think it’s about time that Shopify listens to it’s merchants it has being 6 years and this topic had being visited for about 25.000 times and no solution so far.
Nick, do you have any insight into if Shopify are even considering this as an option within Shopify?
Thanks for you help.
As of today, we still are not able to add a percentage. We are having to add the fee each time someone makes a purchase with a credit card. No percentages are allowed.
@bjrThe app @Nick suggested worked for me. I made the option required and one sku for both paypal and credit card. Just to keep it simple. Hope it works out for you
@jcastro What is your store please? Id like to see how you have used this app.
Appreciate your help!
What is the name of the app and how much does it cost to use please? Or did I miss it i this thread?
Hi @bjr,
The app allows you to add extra fee's to the orders in general here not the payment methods specifically. The app developers touch on this in the app description which you can see below:
It could be worth your time to reach out to the developers of the app directly to find out more information about how exactly this works as they would know best. You can reach contact them directly from their Order & Product Fees webpage here.

I agree with Nick, this app does not add credit card or Paypal fees.
I am paying too many fees already. This should be included in Shopify
Just wait until that start implementing the astronomical fees just for us retailers!!! Bad enough they doubled their fees during COVID because I guess their stockholders weren't happy enough with the billions they were making. Now they want more again! It's coming.
My client is looking for this as well. Those 2% can be his total earnings on an order but it's all flushed away because he cannot automatically add the 2% to the order total. When shopping around online I often see the extra charges for Credit Card and Paypal. Why doesn't Shopify have this? And doesn't Shopify have a place where you can vote for new functionality like this?
Hopefully, Shopify will look into this because Shopify is losing a lot of new potential customers by not adding this feature. Also this might be the reason for me to abandon Shopify which is kinda sad.
Any updates on this? I don't even see that app as an option. What will it take for Shopify to release the option to push the fee to the customer?
I believe if we see any changes it will come with an increase to our monthly fees!
What app are you using now? Thanks
2024 now still shopify’s developer team has NO ANSWER?!?!
We also have the same question. Last year, Shopify introduced a “FEE” that could be added on your POS check out but only in a monetary amount- not a percentage. Although we are thankful for Shopify’s efforts, most state laws allow for a percentage of the total amount of the transaction. We have yet to see any modifications since last year. Why hasn’t Shopify changed this to a percentage? Personally, I do not want to be directed to a third-party app to process a credit card surcharge per transaction only to be gouged by using the app.
I've yet seem any improvements. We are still having to add the fee manually for every credit card transaction. I don't know if you received the recent survey from Shopify but it appears to me that, just as they did during COVID, getting ready to hike our rates again for those of us who use Shopify for retail. If we don't pay then we don't get support. That's just BS to me!
Has anyone found a good answer to this? We need an app that can instantly a surchage on the shopify POS but not at the online store.
We've tried feesly and it worked for the required purpose, however the performance was far too slow to be viable long term. Has anyone got any better alternatives.
Have you found anything?
No. And no changes have been made.
This is unacceptable.
I hope Shopify see this and resolve with a solution. I understand many shop owners are on competitor platforms for this reason. Also an official response from @Shopify if they are planning to address and implement a solution would be appreciated.
I moved to WooCommerce and got this feature straight away. Very happy with the the solution for customers to pick the payment method and show the price difference if credit card is used, was also able to intergrate volume discounts, this is something i could not get support with from Shopify to do.
It would appear that Shopify is getting ready to nickel & dime us with additional fees for "Retail". How do you like WooCommerce?
So we have to pay yet another monthly fee??? Why provide it free then turn around and tell us that now we have to have a separate 3-party app that charges a monthly fee?
Shopify is now turning into a Clover where they nickel and dime us to death!
Additional liabilities. BIG NO! Shopify must include it from basic subscription.
Does anyone know it the app states the the customer that the surcharge will be added on if a credit card is used or does it just add it on.
thanks
You must manually add. We have a sign at our checkout counter advising our customers of a “convenience fee”
What is your website? I would love to see how you did this.
I just switched to Shopify coming from Square and Square actually implemented the option to include a credit card fee on credit card transactions. Might have to go back ...
We are now in 2024, any updates with this? How to do it. Thanks!
Hello,
Shopify has yet to implement a way to add a custom fee. Although just like you, I run a wholesale business so 2.3% adds up. After the purchase has been placed, I manually add the fee in the shipping cost. I just labeled it "CC Processing and Shipping" for everybody reference. Hope this helps!
So here is an easy work around. 1) Create a tile and name it CREDIT CARD FEE. 2) Set the price at the percentage you want ex. 3% fee we will make the cost $0.03. 3) Anytime you want to charge that 3% fee like we do for transactions over 500.00. 4) Change the quantity to the grand total you show on your total. ex 1995.00 plus (our) tax 154.62 = 2149.62 click CREDIT CARD FEE and make the QUANTITY 2149. 5) It has now added your 3% (64.67) fee to the total for a grand total of $2214.09. DONE! Its close, but you cant add partial quantities so it wont be perfectly at 3%. Thoughts?
