How can I edit the balance of a gift card on my ecommerce platform?

I am currently using the gift card feature on Shopify to generate a code and create gift cards for use either in my store physically or on my ecommerce site.  When a customer purchases a card in my store, I can issue a gift card with any amount and save it on my Shopify site.  Once it is issued, I can't find a way to edit the balance if the customer uses the part of the card in my store.  I just have to deactivate the card and make it unusable for future use online.  Can you make the balance line editable for those of us who have brick and mortar stores and Shopify websites?

To "change" the value of what a customer has access to disable the old gift card then immediately re-issue a new gift card with the proper value.

That is not a viable solution.  When a gift card is disabled, it cannot be reissued with the same code.  A new code would have to be issued with the remaining balance.  That would make the physical card unusable.  Because I print physical plastic cards in my store, the expense of issuing a new card every time is not cost-effective.  If it were possible to issue a new card with the same code, then you will have presented a good solution.  I have already tried that.

" good" or not, that's the reality of the current solution for shopify's native gift card system.

If your on a Plus plan I highly recommend talking to your MSM about this shortcoming as a feature request.

If you are on the Plus plan you also have access to the adjustement api that can affect the balance when the giftcard is explicitly created over the api so would either need to find an app using that api for Plus stores or create an app that does.

An alternative is to put together a store credit system with "member" cards to track spending and adjust values but lose the transferable liquidity that gift cards represent to your customers.

An external solution is to investigate a service like rise.ai for such a feature.
