How can I optimize shipping costs for multiple profiles on my online store?

I have a shop that sells lots of items with different weight etc. I have learned how to create shipping profiles and this helps when customers order from a product from that profile. However, when they order from two profiles shipping gets to be way to much and they do not purchase. For example, greenery is $6 and books are $8. If they buy one item from each shipping is an average of $9, however it calculates together and customers have to pay $14. Is there a different way to go about shipping or do I need to start looking up shipping apps from the shopify app store?
