How does Shopify's recurring payment integration work for apps?

We are trying to develop a app and wants to integrate the Shopify recurring payment as our app will have subscription option for the users. How does this recurring payment work? I mean how is the flow from our shopify app to the Shopify API? And what all should we do to integrate this?
