How to alert customers about backorders in the shopping cart?

How can we alert customer in shopping cart that they have a backorder? There are back-in-stock apps that send an email when item is back in stock - but we don't want that.

We ship backorders within one week. If a customer orders an item that is out of stock, we just want them to know their order is on backorder and will take a few extra days to ship.

The problem with the current "ship even if out of stock" system, is the customer does not know if a product is out of stock or not. In other words, if a customer orders an out of stock product and selects next day shipping, the shopping cart says their order will ship the next day - even though it might not ship for a week. That is unacceptable.

Is there an app that alerts customer in shopping cart if their order is on backorder?

You can display the expected shipping date in the shipping rate information using our app JsRates - if the cart contains backorder items (inventory quantity is zero). This way your customer will not see the next day shipping options - rather a date after one week.  If you are keen, install the app and reach out to our support team via "Contact support" in the app. We will help you with the setup. JsRates has a free demo plan to install and setup the rates. You will also need the third party calculated shipping rate activated on your store to use JsRates at checkout.

Thank you for offering JsRates to display expected shipping date. At this time however, until we generate sufficient sales, our shop is limited to the "Basic" Shopify plan. For that reason we are prevented from testing the JsRates app.
