How to detect when a customer moves to checkout

Hi, I was wondering what would be the correct way to detect when a customer moves to checkout and to get the checkout details.

There are a lot of options from what I can see, for instance you can create a custom checkout button and create your own checkout object and use it accordingly. It seems like you could also use the checkout API or possibly webhooks too among many other possibilities.

So what is the best approach? Thanks.
