How to dynamically update product images based on SKU in a variant-heavy store?

We are trying to build out a Shopify Store where the products can have up to 2,000 variants. We have tried several apps that support the configuration that we need, but ran into two major issues. 

1- The SKU needs to be updated depending on which options have been selected. 

2- The main image needs to be updated depending on the configuration selection, not based on a single option selection. 

Advanced Product Options is the closest we have come to a solution, but it only updates images based on the last option that was selected. 

Open to using Code to update the image dynamically based on the current product SKU, if that is possible as well. Basically code in the image and just rely on the app to update the sku..
