How to handle user image uploads in app development?

I have never built a shopify app before but I have built apps in general. So I thought I would see what building a shopify app was like and there are some things that is a little confusing.

I am trying to build an app that would require some user image uploads and then take those images and store them on a server so I can come up in the database with who uploaded what. 

I am confused about if I should make use of shopify app extensions to present this upload page with the file inputs and then send those files to the apps server or if there is a better approach that I am missing?

I have read some documentation and read some blog posts but I am not 100% if the app block extensions work that way, so I thought I would ask here.
