Is Polaris' react component library a current or future necessity for Shopify apps?

Hi folks! We have been researching on the tech stack for a new Shopify app - primarily on Polaris. We are trying to collect evidence/hints stating that the Polaris component kit itself is (or will be) a requirement for Shopify embedded apps. We haven't yet found anything in this regard, but wanted to ask everyone here if someone has come across this.

Note: we know Shopify recommends the app design guidelines. But I am specifically asking about the react components it provides. Eg. What if we have a better react component library that satisfies all of Shopify's design guidelines....can we use it without worrying?
