ReCharge - changing ruleset with existing customers

I need to change rulesets on an existing subscription from monthly to quarterly.  However, we have customers already subscribed to the monthly.  If I change the ruleset will that automatically change how the customers are charged?  Or do we need to create another product that charges quarterly?
