App reviews, troubleshooting, and recommendations
We are building a site that sell digital art and I have concerns about using Shopify's Digital download app. The reviews look like they are split between the app working perfectly or the app doesn't work at all sitting at a 2.7 rating. Our site has over 3,000+ product and we want the ability to store our inventory of our artwork and when customers make a purchase they will get an email with the link to download the art work. Is this app able to do this? I also want anyone's experience with this app and opinion of it. If there is an alterative app that can do what I am asking I would appreciate.
Hi @artcis 😁
This is Ellie from BOGOS: Free gifts, Discounts & Bundles.
Shopify Digital download is a good app, but it doesn't provide live chat support or deep customization. So if you're selling digital products, try looking into alternative apps that have more advanced features. Here are my recommendations, not it order. Test them out and see what works for your store.
1) Filemonk
- Free plan available
- 24/7 Live chat support, which is a big bonus if you have large files and need customization
- Simple, intuitive interface and easy to use
- Free plan available
- Has many robust & advanced features
- Has the most number of reviews, among apps in the same category
All the best,
Ellie

Hi
It looks like we are going to use Big Digital downloads app you recommended.
We have a few questions about it if you can provided some insight.
1. We are looking into the $20 month plan as our art work folder is a total of 499GB out of 500GB the plan allows.
Where would this data be uploaded to and is it backed up?
2. What would the file path look like? Will it be something the app generates or will we have to? We have 2 sites that have digital downloads , Mapsofthepast.com(live) and Wildarts.com( in development). The map site curtly has an app but its Poor performance has forced us to look for alternatives. what our current app uses for file path will be shown.
1. The app used Digital Ocean and AWS to store data. So it will be backed up twice
2. It is hosted on their server, so the path will look like this https://islandclouds.co/string-of-characters
You can also install the app and ask their customer support if you need help ^^ they probably have more experience than I do.

Also we have servers all around the earth to have the best download speed eheh
@artcis 👋🏼 I run a Digital downloads app named Filemonk with my team full time. Happy to share context, or answer questions about selling digital products on Shopify.
1. Shopify's Digital Downloads app is pretty good, though it is limited in feature set. There's a file size limit for uploads, no ways to limit how emails are sent or how many times customers can download files and it's not easy to manage orders with digital products (like correcting mistakes in email etc).
2. The main things you want to look out for are how well the apps handle content security, fraud protection and ease of access to downloads for your customers. We're heavily investing in the first and last - with new updates to protect against illegal sharing and a massive update to support downloads directly from customer's account experience.
Filemonk supports having thousands of products, files and connecting them all up easily through bulk import flows. We also have really affordable plans across the board and I'll be more than happy to help you with setup! 🙂

Hi @artcis,
My name is Léo! A few years ago, I was selling digital products (ebooks on how to find cheaper flight tickets, haha) and couldn't find an app that met my needs. So, I built one!
The Shopify Digital Downloads app has unfortunately been abandoned for a long time, which is really disappointing. Many merchants face issues with it, which is why a lot of them switch to alternatives like Big Digital Download (link).
Handling large inventories (3,000+ products)?
Automatic email with a download link after purchase?
Reliable alternative to Shopify’s Digital Downloads?
Let me know if you have any questions—I’m happy to help! We have a generous free plan on the app, 24/7 support, and extra benefits for businesses selling digital products for the first time
