What if the Retail Barcode Labels App becomes unavailable?

Hi Shopify Community,

 

We are looking forward to adding the Retail Barcode Labels App to our admin, create one per SKU and purchasing the Shopify Barcode scanner; however, what would happen if this app became unavailable in the future as barcodes will be included / vectorized on the label of each item and go into this year's calendar production? 

 

Must we need to create new barcodes for each item and purchase another barcode scanner?

The barcodes created by Retail Barcode Labels will be assigned to the barcode fields in each of your product's attributes, so you should be able to continue using the same barcodes with a different third-party barcode app/program. We also use industry-standard barcode scanners, which are Bluetooth compatible, so you can use them with any device and they're widely integrated among third-parties. If you'd like to learn more about our barcode scanners, then please take a look at the following models:

 

Typically, when Shopify discontinues an app, we will notify our merchants and share some alternatives so that our merchants have time to make the switch to a different app. Nevertheless, we're not seeing any plans on sunsetting the Retail Barcode Labels at the moment. 

 

I'd love to hear more about your business! What kinds of products are you selling? Do you have a marketing plan prepared for your store?

One last question. 

 

Is it only possible to scan items with any of the Shopify Bluetooth barcode scanners or could we scan inventory and add items to the cart at checkout with any phone scanner?

If you're using Shopify POS to add items to cart and processing orders in-person, then you can also grant the Shopify POS app access to your device's camera - this would allow you to scan products, receipts, and 2D gift cards. However, I wouldn't be able to confirm this for other third-party phone scanners, attachments, or add-ons.
