what language can I write Shopify apps in?

I'm confused. Is it JavaScript or Ruby. I've seen tutorials for both.

I don't really want to learn Ruby if I don't have to.

Hi,

There is no limitation, you can create apps in any language you prefer.

It's true that most of shopify apps are built on ruby on rails, but that's not something mandatory.

For example I have recently published an app which is built on .NET as BE and Angular as FE. The main difference I see here is that I was unable to find much information about shopify apps which are running on such platform on internet. Also since my app is mostly focused on heavy backgroud processed I trust OOP languages more in such cases.

I believe you would save some time while implementing simple apps on RoR, but if you are not familiar with it at all, probably that's not your case.
