Why are there discrepancies in referral site data between API calls and native dashboards?

I have found a discrepancy between the referral site provided in the API call and the Shopify native dashboards. I have some orders in the Shopify API call being given an internal referral site, coming from within the store itself, while those same orders appear to be coming from Youtube in the Shopify Referring native dashbaords. Why is this the case?
