I want to make sure I understand the problem you are having. Did you purchase a custom domain from a domain host? If yes, the domain belongs to you right away. To manage the domain or connect it to your Shopify store you will need to sign into your domain host to edit the DNS settings. We have steps for this here:

Did you buy your domain from Shopify or did you buy your domain from a 3rd party domain host?
