Shopify themes, liquid, logos, and UX
We are currently using the Debut theme. My question is, we would like to add a place for customers to leave notes about their order on the checkout page. How would we go about doing this?
Hi @stephaniemevius,
The Debut theme has the option to enable order notes in the theme settings.
Visit the theme editor and check the option to enable cart notes in the Cart page section.
Follow these steps:

I followed the steps, and the note field shows up in my preview, but not on the actual site's pop-up cart. I am using the Debut theme.
thank you
Thanks, I was able to do that but the note option doesn't show up on my cart. any ideas how to make that part happen?
Hi Lilith,
I have followed all the advice above and can see that the 'enable cart notes' box is clicked however cannot see the notes box at all in the preview screen or in a test order. I have tried unclicking and reclicking (saving each time) and still nothing. Any troubleshooting thoughts? I am also using the debut theme.
Many thanks
Hi @NicoleWCJ. I made a quick GIF recording for you to see where this is enabled in the Debut theme.
Thanks for letting me know exactly which theme you're using as well, this is helpful for me to assist you.
Remember that the cart notes won't show up unless there is something in the cart at the time.
If your results aren't like the one I have in my GIF recording there, let me know.
There might be some custom code you might need to roll back or you may have to use some of the alternative methods in my earlier post above to overcome the custom code issue if that's the case.

How do I edit the code for the notes box? I would like to change the default message from "Enter a gift note or special delivery instructions below" to something else.
Hi, @vishaggarwal!
You should be able to edit the wording for that under the language editor for your theme.
This can be found by going to Online Store > Themes and click Actions for the theme you're working on. Select Edit Language.
This will bring you to the editor for wording on your theme.
The screenshot below shows you where to find the field to change:
Don't forget to click Save when you're done editing.

Hi, is there an app for adding a note to each individual product in the cart?
For example, if you are doing customized items.
Is there a way to add a note to each item?
Hi, @DanielleYola. There are some apps to help you with this.
I've listed 2 recommended apps below:
Both apps let you create any type of field or option for your products including any text field customizations or other options that you need the customer to select before adding to the cart.

Hello! I'm writing on behalf of a client - i noticed there's lots of instructions for how to add a notes and date field to the CART, but no instructions for adding it to the CHECKOUT. The notes and date fields work great when you are in your cart, but if someone clicks "Buy with ShopPay" directly from a product, it takes them immediately to checkout, bypassing the date/notes altogether.
Is there any way around this? Can we not modify the checkout?
@Joelle At this time the checkout isn't an area that can be changed or edited. This is to maintain the secure integrity of the checkout for both the buyers and merchants.
If your client is using an accelerated checkout button that bypasses the cart page, they can try to use an app that will capture the details from the product page instead. I recommend using either Infinite Product Options or Bold's Product Options apps to add an extra field to the product page for a note or other product selections.

Hi!
So, I have successfully added the note in the Cart page.
I want to know is there a way to make the filling Mandatory?
I've gone through the forum and the codes provided doesn't work with my theme. I'm using Debutify.
Hoping to get a solution. Thanks
Hey @arjun0274 glad that you got it working. For the field to be mandatory for customers to fill out before checking out you'll want to contact on of our Shopify Experts to help you with this or the developers of your theme. I highly recommend hiring one of our partners to help you with this. You can find a suitable Shopify Partner in the Experts Marketplace or request a quote by following this guide here.
I also recommend posting this in one of the discussion topics as its own post. This will help you get some eyes on it from partners or developers that frequent the community.
Alternatively, let's say you need the field filled out for details on a product. In this case, you'll likely find it more effective to add fields to the product pages. You can use an app like Infinite Product Options to create those fields on the product page.
Lastly, if you'd like to tackle the coding yourself, you can try out the solutions on this post here to help you out.

Hi Lilith,
I have no problem to display the cart note on my cart page. However, this note was not captured or stored (I assume) after the customer completed the order. I did test order and wrote down the cart notes for this order but in my ADMIN order page where I can see the details of each order, the Notes field (top right corner) did not display the notes that I wrote when I placed that order.
And also, I tried to incorporate this notes in my "Notification order confirmation" email and it also didn't show the information that I entered.
Thanks
Actually the question was "Adding a "Note" Field for Customers in Checkout"
Not in Cart
@JoeRam This sounds strange indeed! Which theme are you currently using and have you had any code changes made to it?
If you're using a third-party theme and you haven't made changes to the code, I'd highly recommend contacting the developer of the theme to see if there is a snippet of code that isn't capturing the correct data.
On the other hand, if you're using a Shopify theme (free themes) and you have not made any changes to the code, let me know! We may be able to check into that for you via email. Alternatively, you can also contact our live support team anytime.

Hey, @stephaniemevius!
My name is Lilith, I'm on the Social Care team at Shopify.
The answer that @BrianAtWork gave above is spot on! We do have a tutorial page for this as well in case you needed a step by step reference to go along with the excellent screenshots above.
I wanted to also include some other options in case you needed something a bit more complex. In the event you needed to have specific notes added for different products or perhaps needed a more customized option variation for your product pages, you can definitely use one of the apps below:
If your product needs specific customization for each unit sold, you may benefit from the above apps. However, if you're looking for just one order note you'll want to use the order notes box at the cart instead.
Let me know if that helped! I'm happy to answer any questions you think of as you work on your business.
