Adding Sidebar menu to my Shop

Hello! How can I add a lefthand sidebar menu that appears when clicking on my "Shop" dropdown menu and selecting a product category. I am currently using the Dawn theme. The desired result is once you click on a product category the subcategories appear on the left hand side - for example clicking on "Apparel" will bring up "Hoodies" "Leggings" "Shorts" in a left sidebar menu.
