Build a collection page made up of collections

Hi,

I would love to build a collection page (or general page) that is made up collections, but only specific collections (not all collections).  The way I have done this up to now has been to create a custom page template and to add featured collections onto that one page (see https://vandalgallery.art/pages/artists).

This might be the only solution, but I am finding the process quite labour intensive to add all the collections and keep it maintained.  I am also concerned that I might, through normal human error, miss collections off this page or put them in the wrong alphabetical order.  It's also fiddly to move collections between featured collections when reorganising alphabetically because they're all made up of blocks of 15 maximum collections and you cannot drag-and-drop between featured collection lists.  Furthermore, I have the same thing with a different business which might get to the point that this page would have hundreds of collections, making it unwieldy and too much on one page.

Collections on Shopify, by contrast, are automatically populated based on product tags, plus they are automatically organised into multiple pages which you can click through (e.g. 1, 2, 3).  Ideally, I want this Artists page page - which is a collection of collections - to be organised exactly like this.  In other words:

- automatically populated with collections identified with a certain tag or identifier, e.g., "artist"

- automatically sorted alphabetically

- automatically organised into pages which can be clicked through

I cannot think of a simple way to do this.  The difficulty is mostly because collections do not normally have "tags" or identifiers, at least that I can see.  Has anyone got any smart ideas or possible things to try on this!?  Thank you.

@JBMartin why are you building a custom. Shopify has a default page for this and it's shown automatically see here > https://vandalgallery.art/collections

Ah yes, sorry Anthony, I meant that the page should only include specific collections, not all collections.  E.g., On this site, the Artists page should only contain collections that are "artists".  It should not contain collections such as Pop Art, Animal Art, Surreal Artwork, Limited Edition Prints, etc.  So I want a way to categorise collections, in a sense.

On my other website, which is kind of similar (currently behind password), I could end up with thousands of collections that need organising in this way.  Having to put them all manually into a single page with hundreds of Collection Lists is just not feasible!

Hope that makes sense.  Thank you!

Ohh, because collections doesn't come with tags, you can achieve this throught metafield.

It would look something /collections?YourMetafieldHere so all collections with the tags can be shown.

So whenever the url ? with a metafield those details will show metafield.

Because this involves advances coding in would recommend get it done with your Shopify developer.

Thank you, that's really helpful and does give me a good clue that this will be possible. I agree, this one is probably beyond my limited abilities(!), but it gives me a great idea on how I can take this forward to a developer.

Many thanks indeed!
