Change Copyright info on footer

Hi,

I've tried to find info on how to change the copyright from the store name to my legal business name. Most of the info I've found so far is either outdated or does not relate to at least my theme (Supply). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hey there!

My name is Alice, and I'm one of the Guru Team here at Shopify, thanks for reaching out to us on the forums!

To change the copyright text within the footer section of the store on Shopify Themes, you just need to change the details in the Settings > General > Store Name.

The coding of the footer section of the theme uses the information inputted into the Settings to display the copywritten name.

If you have any issues with this, or if you need any help with anything else, you can let me know here, or the awesome Guru team are [here](https://help.shopify.com/questions) for you 24/7 here and are more than happy to help out! ?

Have an awesome day,

Hi Alice,

Thanks for the quick response. What I'm trying to figure out is if I can have the copyright list something different then my store name. Since the name that I do business under is different then the store name. It's mostly become more of a curiosity if it can be done then anything vital. I'm guessing I need to change something in the coding but I can't seem to find where (I would have thought it would be in the footer.liquid but it doesn't seem to be there).

Thanks again!

Mark

You can indeed change the copyright in the footer.liquid code.

look for the following code Line 171  to 180

<div class="grid-item{% unless shop.enabled_payment_types == empty %} large--two-fifths{% endunless %}">
          <ul class="legal-links inline-list">
              <li>
                &copy; {{ 'now' | date: '%Y' }} {{ shop.name | link_to: routes.root_url }}
              </li>
              <li>
                {{ powered_by_link }}
              </li>
          </ul>
      </div>

You can change line 174 to whatever you want it to show.

&copy; {{ 'now' | date: '%Y' }} {{ 'text of what you want to display' | link_to: routes.root_url }}
              </li>

I know this is an old thread however I thought it would be good info to have since I was looking for it myself.

I am using the minimal theme.  I found that the footer is in the theme.liquid.  I just searched for Copyright.  It does not automatically update the Copyright year when the year changes, even though it is a variable.  You have to edit something and then click save.

        <!-- Begin copyright -->
        <div class="span12 tc copyright">
          {% assign current_year = 'now' | date: "%Y" %}
          <p>{{ 'layout.copyright.copyright_html' | t: year: current_year, name: shop.name }} | {{ powered_by_link }} {% if settings.designed_by %}{% endif %} </p>
          {% if shop.enabled_payment_types.size > 0 %}
          <ul class="credit-cards clearfix">
            {% for type in shop.enabled_payment_types %}
            <li><img width="50" src="{{ type | payment_type_img_url }}" /></li>
            {% endfor %}
          </ul> <!-- /.credit-cards -->
          {% endif %}
        </div>
        <!-- End copyright -->
Thanks,
Greg

Should the copyright year be the current year or the year the website launched?

Copyright should be the date the site was created. If you update the copyright to current date, that means you can't claim copyright prior to that date.

Strange... I just read in the forum from a Shopify theme developer that it is supposed to be the current year otherwise it means you no longer have the copyright after that date listed.

Confusing....

So copyright basically protects your original work from being infringed upon and copied at risk of litigation from the date it was created and registered. So the date of creation would be the date to have as copyright not not continually updated which means it might have not been copyrighted at an earlier date. Copyright usually last 70 years post mortem of the creator.

I am not a lawyer but that is just basic copyright law info that can be googled.

I would not just depend my words or the words of a Shopify theme developer, i would consult a copyright lawyer. If copyrighted material would cause you loss if infringed upon, you will further need to register your copyrighted material and not just have a copyright statement on there.

not so confusing, and to be honest, nothing will truly protect your content, images and everything else.  except a court order!

in my case, i just put this in, to cover my images, because i copyrighted the images with copyright office back in 2014.  it's good practice as a photographer to do this.

<div class="footer__text">&copy;2014 - {{ 'now' | date: "%Y" }}, {{ shop.name | link_to: '/' }}, all rights reserved</div>

good luck and i'm not a lawyer.

Hi there - i have the following code in my footer.liquid file.

I'm trying to get my copyright to show but it is currently blank.

I tried to remove the "blank" in the code, but it doesn't work

Thanks

{% if section.settings.show_copyright %}
<p class="footer__small-text">
&copy; {{ 'now' | date: '%Y' }} {{ shop.name }}
{% if section.settings.copyright_text != blank %}
{{ section.settings.copyright_text }}
{% endif %}
</p>

Maybe try to put in a <div class> as above. Try commenting out your code that you posted and inserting the code above and see if that works.

@ErezMed

I need your store login details. Yes, I know your login details are confidential. For this second option, I have added your store to my Shopify partner account so I will check your code easily and manage what you think about it?

The copyright should be the current year. Check out popular sites that have been around for years like Macys. Their website say 2020, not the year the website was established
