Checkout and applying a discount

Is it possible to apply a discount at checkout if a customer selects "pick up" rather than "ship?" I am using Canopy as the theme. This is all very new to me.

You can write Shopify Checkout Scripts to apply a discount on the shipping method selected if you're on Shopify Plus. 

If your plan is not Shopify Plus, then, unfortunately, this is not possible because you can't intervene in Shopify Checkout. 

Another workaround solution is to create a discount code, then put the code in the pickup description, so the customer enters it during checkout. However, the code might be abused by customers selecting other shipping methods. 

Besides, if you use the Store Pickup + Delivery app by Zapie or the Store Pickup & Delivery Date by Secomapp, you can use Automatic Discount to offer a discount if customers select pick up.

Ah I'm sorry it's the shipping method description, not the pickup description. 

You can add it by going to your Themes > Edit language > Search for shipping and scroll down to shipping method notice. 

Then you can add your text like this.
