Creating subcollections via buttons in Dawn Theme

I was able to set up the Sub collections via the navigation menus. I currently have 10 primary categories with a few collections contained within each category.

I am currently trying to set up a similar navigation using the buttons. I attempted to set the button link to Collections. This links to the Collection List Page. As I don't want all Collections shown, just the Parent Collections (primary categories), I created a Collections list to show those as I was not able to select those main collections to show.  At first glance, it appeared to allow a secondary sub collections list to be built. However when I went back to check the other parent collections to build out those sub collections, it showed the list I built for the first Parent collection.

In searching for how to perform this capability, I found instructions that showed how to build pages to handle this for vintage themes but not for the 2.0 themes such as Dawn. https://bsscommerce.com/shopify/how-to-add-sub-collections-in-shopify/

Is there a way in Dawn to do this, such as a feature in the Dawn Theme that I have not found yet or to do the old page build out? Anyone done this or know how it is done?

Thank you in advance.

Hi there @RebaElias,

Shopify allows up to 3 level subcategories and it can be easily done in terms of navigation links but when it comes to sub-categories pages, you'll need to code each page. Shopify 2.0 is relatively new so tutorials for code edits are few. You'll either need to use the previous version or hire a developer who will use the code according to .jason files (Shopify 2.0 is now using .jason file for templates).

Hi,

Did you manage to get a response to this? I am trying to achieve the same thing and finding it frustrating that I am unable to complete what seems fairly standard in theory. I would like to display a list of primary collections on my home page such as 'bath and shower.' I would like this to link to a separate page that contains collections for all sub categories i.e shampoo, soap, body lotions etc.

Can anybody assist with this please. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

James

I found that I need to get a designer to create a page (or modify the
product page) for this function for the Dawn theme. From my understanding,
it is to use the main menu and if there are sub collections, to show those
sub collections on the product page.

There are instructions on how to create that functionality for the older
themes but I didn’t check to see how it would translate to the 2.0 themes.

I ended up paying for the Expanse theme, which advertises this
functionality. Of course I ran into issues with this in that theme. I need
to send an email to that developer. I may dive into the code myself if I’m
feeling exceptionally motivated tomorrow.

For having a large catalog, this is an incredibly essential functionality
for ease of navigation and better utilization of the themes.

@RebaElias Can you elaborate on the issues you discovered with Expanse?  I am testing this theme mainly for this very capability.

thank you!
