Shopify themes, liquid, logos, and UX
I'm currently using a "Buy X, Get Y" discount code on my Shopify store: when customers buy 3 items, they receive free premium shipping. However, I've noticed that customers have to manually select the premium shipping option at checkout rather than it being automatically applied. This has led to some confusion, and from what I've seen in community discussions, it seems auto-applying the 'gift' isn’t possible without a separate app.
I was thinking a custom pop-up trigger might help here. I use Omnisend for email marketing and other pop-ups, but I haven’t been able to configure it to trigger when a third item is added to the cart. Has anyone figured out how to set this up? It could be a great alternative to an expensive app!
Hi @isabelbrnzls 😊
This is Ellie from BOGOS: Free gifts, Discounts & Bundles.
My recommendation: You can create a trigger popup when customers buy product X. The popup should allow customers to add the product Y right to cart. And when customers proceed to checkout, they will get Y for free because you have set up the Shopify Buy X get Y discounts.
Try Smartpopup: Promotion Popup to create the flow I just suggest. The app is free so it won't cost you anything. And as I remember, it does allow you to trigger popup when customer have X in cart and customers can add to care Y from the popup too.
On the other hand, if you're looking for a simpler approach: when customers buy X they can get the Y free automatically in cart
-> Try BOGOS: Free gifts, Discounts & Bundles (4.9 overall rating, 2000+ reviews)
All the best,
Ellie

Hi there!
Thanks for mentioning Omnisend—we’re happy to jump in and share some insights! 🎉
It sounds like you’re looking for a way to streamline the process, and Omnisend does have an in-built feature that could help.
Under the display options for pop-ups, you can set up a custom trigger and add a small code snippet to your website. This could allow you to display a message or guide customers when a third item is added to the cart.
Additionally, if you’re using Shopify Plus, you might want to look into Checkout Scripts. These can pre-select or restrict shipping options based on your cart contents or customer tags. For example, you could automatically apply a specific shipping rate when the conditions are met.
We hope this helps clarify things! Let us know if you have more questions—we’re here to help. 😊
