Customize mega menu to not show tiered categories

Hello!

We're currently in the process of revamping our website and we're a bit stuck on the navigation side, working with native functions.

Specifically, we'd like to drill down our navigation/menu to go like this: Mens (dropdown) - Jeans and Chinos, Tops, Outerwear, Accessories, Footwear, Apothecary, Home Goods

This is how it currently looks right now while we're messing with the menu items a bit:

Ultimately, we really like how Buck Mason does this on their website, going from MEN and drilling directly down to the subcategories. Seems simple yet we're not able to figure this one out.

We've been trying to mess with the logic of menus from categories/subcategories on menu items and can't achieve this as it highlights the category up on top (like example shown in first screenshot).

Anyone deal with this? We're also working on a test theme: Impact
