Hi All,

Is there an easy way to upload content (bulk) via Excel. The Basic Bulk tool that Shopify provides is personally not working for me. So i hope you guys have some advice for me. Via an App is also possible / an option. We import our products via an app/API. So i want to make sure the solution doesn't overwrite supplier data. I only want update Title, Description and meta fields via an bulk upload

Thanks for your help!

Hi @TOC-MR,

The Shopify admin has both the bulk editor and a CSV import which can be used to update existing products. If you haven't tried the CSV import option yet there are some instructions on their help site. (As they mention, I'd strongly recommend testing against a single product first to make sure you're not losing any data).

If you're open to using an app for this I'd recommend checking out our Ablestar Bulk Product Editor, specifically the spreadsheet edits section. Here, you can upload almost any spreadsheet as long as the first column can be used to match on a product. Then you can map the additional columns to fields on your store. Here's a screenshot of an example spreadsheet that's using product handles to update titles, descriptions and a color metafield:

Two advantages to using the app are:

  • You can undo any changes with a click
  • Your spreadsheet doesn't need to match a strict format

It's also possible to bulk edit products in the app without needing a spreadsheet. For example you could find all products that don't have a metafield set and edit those (with a live preview)

I hope this helps, please let me know if you have questions about either the Shopify CSV import/update or the app.

Best,

Daniel

Hi @Ablestar_Daniel

Thanks for your quick reply. I have a question:

Regarding CSV: If you don't want to overwrite something, you just don't add that field in your csv right?

Regarding your App: It looks very good and very easy :). Question I just test with a test product that we don't sell / have visible on the website. I'm receiving this error message. I am not sure where to change. Selected NL pricing and the NL Market is our primary market

Hi @TOC-MR,

Yes, for the Shopify CSV import/update you don't need to include all the columns. If you're editing a product-level field (eg, title, description, vendor, product metafield etc..) you need to have the following columns:

  • Handle
  • Title
  • (the remaining columns you want to update)

If you want to edit variant attributes (price, compare-at price etc..) you'll need the following columns:

  • Handle
  • Title
  • Option1 Value
  • Option2 Value
  • Option3 value
  • (the remaining columns you want to update)

For the test upload you did, I apologize for the problem, it seems like it was there was an issue configuring the price list for the primary market. Can you try it again now, it should be working.

Best,

Daniel

Hi @Ablestar_Daniel

Upload worked now. However everything changed correctly except the price

Hi @TOC-MR,

I'm glad the other fields updated. For the price it looks like you were editing the price/compare at price for the Netherlands market, not the default price on the store. (Even though Netherlands is the default market it can have a different price that the default price for a product.)

When you upload the spreadsheet, instead of selecting "Netherlands - Price" can you select just "Price" that shows up under the Variant Fields? And do the same for the "Compare-at price":

This should update the default price for the product that you're seeing in the Shopify admin. I hope this helps but let me know if you're still running into issues.

Daniel

Hi @Ablestar_Daniel

Will try to do that. Other question, i made some words bol in the excel file. However when i do the spreadsheat upload the words are not bold again. Do i need to use HTML coding with the upload to get those words bold, or am i doing something else wrong?

Hi @TOC-MR,

Yes, if you'd like to include some formatting like bold text you can do so but you would need to upload the description in HTML. For example:

This is product is <strong>Brand New</strong>
