Express theme: Slideshow instead of an image

is it possible to do a slideshow of images instead of just one image, in the hero section?

You'd need to configure a Javascript carousel library and wire it up with that section. Unfortunately there is not a simple way to do this, it requires quite a few hours of work.

Alternatively, there are copy/paste solutions that, while they are not exactly what you're looking for, can serve its purpose and ultimately still help you to offer your product and make the sales. 

This solution may interest you. It works out of the box with the Express theme and all other Shopify premium/free themes.
