Help adding color swatches to Dawn 15.2.0

I am trying to add color swatches to my product page on shopify dawn theme. I've successfully added color swatches using metafields to the product, but am having trouble getting it to show on my storefront.

On product page they appear to be set up and linked successfully under variants for the item and category metafields, see below:

However on my storefront under the color box I am not seeing the swatches added. I did try to connect color metaobject to the variant picker but it is saying there are no fields compatible with this block.
