How can add color swatches to all products?

Is there a way to connect the color metafield to any product? I recently learned how to add a color option to some of my products and use the swatch feature and upload my own image, which is great. However, with some other products, I get the message that the Color metafield is not available. An example is my notecards in the greeting card category. Is there any way around this? I'm using the free theme Studio.
