How can I add text under product image to differentiate between options?

Uploaded a mass of images that vary and want to start creating variants so customers can select the image they want on product. But I need to have text on image for them to know which image is which. As you can see in image, there is no text under images, even ones with alt text filled in, so im confused what that does
