Re: How to remove express checkout buttons?

How can I delete express checkout buttons from my website?

Michael180

Can anybody tell me how to remove these delightfull express checkout buttons that are causing 50% of my customers to leave my website without completing their order?
These buttons are mistakenly causing my customers to believe that these are the only payment options offered by my website.
Can anybody advice on a piece of coding to remove them? These express checkout buttons only seem to be visible inside the cart section (see below screenshot), but I have heard that sometimes there  are also visible on the product page. I just want to delete them from my website entirely.

I tried looking at older posts but none of that code seems to work anymore as shopify has updated it.

Hi, @Michael180 !

Sorry to hear that the Checkout Express buttons have been confusing some of your customers at checkout. Did you use a heat map app to find out what was causing your customers to abandon their cart? Curious how you've collected this feedback!

As for removing them, what theme are you using? We did share an article in the Community on how to remove the Express Checkout buttons from first checkout page - have you tried this? This tutorial is an advanced tutorial. If you're using a free Shopify theme, our team may be able to help you with implementing this tutorial. To make this request, you can reach out to our Support team directly. If you're using a third-party theme, then you'll need to ask another Community user for some assistance, or perhaps hire a Shopify Expert

As for product pages, you are likely referring to dynamic checkout buttons. We have a help article on adding and removing dynamic checkout buttons from your product page. This option may or may not be available, and will depend on the theme you are using for your store.

Let us know how this goes!

Hi Hilary,

I collected the feedback by having 50 facebook friends go on my store to make a purchase and give me their overall feedback. All contestants were Dutch. Over 70% of the respondants mentioned that they didn't like the checkout screen were you need to provide your information (the information page). The reason they gave was that it showed ''shop pay, paypal, and google pay'' checkout buttons.
Furthermore 50% of these interviewed mentioned that were not able to complete their purchase because they did not have a paypal, shop pay, or google pay account, and were reluctant to go to the trouble of making one. In other words they thought that these 3 checkout options were the only payment options available.

This outcome makes a lot of sense because when you do some research online you can find that in the Netherlands, 59% of all online payments are made through IDEAL. Paypal accounts for 5% of the Dutch ecommerce transactions, and credit card payments for 10% (visa, mastercard and all others combined). Shop pay and Google pay weren't even on that list.

In other words these express checkout options might work in a country like the United States where these payment options are common, but will not work in other countries that have their own dominant local payment providers.

Your advice:
You mentioned a possible solution described in this article: https://community.shopify.com/c/Shopify-Design/Remove-the-Express-Checkout-buttons-from-first-Checko...
This solution does not work for me. I use a theme called Wokiee, that I purhcased from Themeforest.

Solution:

Finally I managed to solve this problem by going into my shopify settings > payments > payment providers > manage. In this menu I disabled shop pay, paypal, apple pay and google pay. This solved the problem for me and the express checkout buttons are now no longer visible on the information page of the checkout process. However, they are also no longer available as payment options on the final screen of the checkout process.
This is really an unnecessary workaround, and shopify should simply make an option to disbale these express checkout buttons without losing these payment options at the final checkout screen.

Seems like shopify cares more about earning money from promoting these payment options than their customers.

Thanks very much for your detailed response, and apologies for my delay. Following your explanation, I do understand the frustration regarding this setting since your customers have given you some critical feedback regarding their checkout experience. I'm glad you've found a workaround for now, but also understand that disabling these options all together of course is not ideal.

Alternatively, one option is to see if an app such as Easy Hide works with your theme to hide the express checkout buttons. Another option is hiring a Shopify Expert or third-party developer to have the checkout buttons removed from your current theme (since our tutorial does not work for your theme). Another thought is reaching out to your theme developer directly and ask if perhaps they have recommendations for getting this done. Lastly, perhaps another Community member can assist with some coding recommendations for you, as this is out of our scope of support since you're using a third party theme.

Regardless, we highly appreciate the feedback on this feature in the checkout, especially how it's affecting your customers in the Netherlands. I have submitted this feedback on your behalf to our developers. While we can't guarantee any changes, the more feedback we receive the better. Thanks again for your detailed reply and research information you've shared.

hi there,

I have the same issue here. I followed the code and it worked for a few days. However, it stopped working when I check my website today. Could you help me with this?

Thanks!

Hi, @gq999

Thanks for joining the thread. Great work implementing the tutorial, however I'm sorry to hear it seems to have stopped working on your store.

Theme customizations at this level are considered an advanced customization and are out of our scope of support. That being said, if you're using a free Shopify theme, our Themes team may be able to help you implement this tutorial. To find out if this may be possible, you'll need to reach out to our Support team directly and make this request.

If you're using a third party theme, then you'll need to reach out to a developer for support, such as a Shopify Expert. As well, you can always make a detailed post in our Community Design board regarding the issue and hopefully another Community user will be able to help!

in the UK and agree with the poster 100% - paypal charges a lot more in fee's than the banks and customers are pushed towards paypal initially, would love to remove from the initial leads to payment but not accepting altogether is not an option i would wish - initial lead in to payment should show all methods accepted when setting up

Now in 2023, finally you can hide express checkout options using the BeSure Checkout Rules app. Simply create a rule to hide express checkout options and activate it on your store. No coding required, but it only works for new customers, they won't see the express checkout options. Repeating customers with auto address fill, will see express checkout options, but usually when address is auto filled, it skips the information page entirely for them and it goes directly to shipping page on the checkout. So, it works out well.

Hi Hilary,

The link to your blog post is broken. The Express checkout is a very annoying feature that should be optional and easily disabled by a toggle switch in settings.
I've used the Hide PayPal in Cart app - it no longer does what it claims. I've tried to install the Express Checkout Hider - it isn't working.
Please natively disable this feature in Shopify.

It's really beyond ridiculous. In the last 3 years, Shopify only managed to do the most useless stuff or even broke core features and hasn't implemented a single useful new change. They won't implement anything, they probably have some special deals with those providers.

Hi, for me it worked to remove the ticks from payments: settings--> payments-->manage--> removed all the ticks from payments that don't interest me, such as gpay, shoppay, apple. for paypal you have to deactivate it.

This link you provided for " remove the Express Checkout buttons from first checkout page " does not work... it just links to your blog. The other link you provided to remove "dynamic" checkout does not work because dynamic checkout option is not in the place described.

Has this issue been solved yet?  It's two years later so I am wondering if a disable toggle/option was added in "edit default theme content"?  It does seem that the "express checkout" with the limited payment options is an add for these payment companies.  It's not only a distraction, but it's actively discouraging business for shopify users.  Disabling the express checkout would be a very easy customization to add for shopify users.  The fact that it bothers so many people, and would be easy to fix, makes it seem that there is an ulterior motive.  If these companies are paying you, I think you could be transparent about it.  You do offer a great product and I'm sure many people would understand that you need to make money and this is an easy way to do it.

this thread is not about removing the payment options.  we want to be able to accept those types of payments but we do not want the large express checkout buttons on top of the page.   but then still accept those payments.  like most websites that are not shopify.

@Hilary This is a regular issue for us, especially when customers want to use AfterPay or Laybuy.

And after stepping through the process on mobile myself, it's actually pretty confusing because when you tap 'Alternative payment methods' (which isn't obvious to begin with) it takes you back to the very start of checkout. You actually think something's broken.

Because of this, one recent customer said they didn't trust our check-out because it was broken but we regularly field questions like 'How do I pay with AfterPay' or 'Where is AfterPay' or 'You say you accept AfterPay but it's not there'.

Don't we get charged extra fees for non-Shopify payments anyway? Here's hoping you're not pushing customers away from their preferred alternative payment methods, it's not their fault - right?

It just wastes everyone's time - no?

In addition to the other great suggestions, we've added a line of text to the Account text which is near the accelerated payment buttons - like this...

payment-details.jpg

You can change the Account login text under: Settings > Checkout > Checkout Language > Manage Checkout Language.

Then scroll down to 'Checkout customer account' and change the text under 'Have an account label' - like this...

have-an-account-label.jpg

You'll want to check how this text displays on mobile - maybe don't make it too long which is why we shortened it to: Pay via Visa, Amex, Master Card, Afterpay, Laybuy on next page. Account?

And if you have Shopify+ ($2,000 per month!!!) then you can also tweak the cart CSS so it appears above the 'Contact' headline like this...

payment-details-shopifyplus.jpg

But we don't have Shopify+ so are stuck with the text appearing under the word 'Contact' like most people. Bummer.

Another thing we've done is change the 'Continue' button on the first checkout page to 'Continue to shipping & payment'. We feel this helps set expectations and makes it clearer customers can select their preferred payment method on the next pages - like this...

continue-button.jpg

You can change this on that same 'Manage Checkout Language' page (nearer the top) under 'Continue to shipping method' here...

continue-shipping-method.jpg

None of this is ideal and it's surprising things are taking so long to get fixed. Shopify support told me that more flexible checkout customisation is coming to most account levels at the end of the year.

Hope the above helps someone.

Cheers, Ben

Same here. Customers emailing me why I only accept paypal and Google pay. Come on Shopify!? Absolutely the same, I cannot understand why they do not just enable this as an option in the checkout options. It is literally a 5-min task that a junior dev can do. There are no side effects if you deploy it with a default value, which is the same behavior as now. Please, SHOPIFY put this in place ASAP.

Shopify, please listen to your customers, especially ones who just joined...

This express check out button is useless and just adds a layer of confusion to our customers and lowering our conversion leads to sales.

Please just make this optional for us, but you can still include all the payment options in the final checkout page.

The express checkout buttons are also very confusing for my clients! Please help....and listen to us...your customers....

Hi Michael,

I know its years late but this is the answer!

Answer
  1. In your admin, go to online store > themes.
  2. Then Action > Edit code.
  3. Inside cart.liquid file, paste this at the top: <style>.additional-checkout-buttons { display: none; } </style>

Kind regards

Hi,

I actually just had a meeting with Shopify PMs responsible for the checkout topic, and they were very interested in understanding this issue. We already talked through some ideas in how to fix this, and they promised to take this seriously and put in their roadmap.

If this new development makes you as happy as it makes me, how about celebrating this with a new skincare (DUŠA & KAMEN) for you or your significant other. I am so happy I will throw in 15% of discount with the code "ExpressCheckout15" because I have been working on getting this issue to Shopify for more than 6 months now, and I feel heard the very first time.

All the best from Germany ❤️

Now that `checkout.liquid` is being deprecated, is there any way to accomplish this using the new Checkout Extensibility features?

as @silversorensen mentioned, the express checkout buttons are visible during checkout. Now that `checkout.liquid` will be deprecated, we no longer have access to `document.getElementById` or similar in order to hide the parent div pictured here ("Information" checkout step)

Beyond ridiculous, facing the same issue and had multiple emails from customers about it. A feature like this that impacts the core experience of our customers, should not be released without proper testing. Leaving this to store owners to figure out on their own when it is clearly impacting revenue, is negligence in my opinion.

Hiding this feature doesn't sound like an incredibly difficult feature to ship so my guess is that Paypal (and others?) are paying Shopify to be featured here.

Please give this priority.

Our customers are also emailing us about check out payments being confusing. They don't think they can simply pay with a credit card.

Shopify should have a field to turn this off under settings. Instead it looks like shopify is pushing express check out hard because they make it impossible to disable. In 2023 none of the older methods and aps work.

We now receive weekly emails on this, and for each person who can be bothered emailing, many more leave thinking we don't think we accept VISA! Stupid - right?

The accelerated payment options go first because the rest of the checkout occurs on the accelerated platform, we get that. But we need an option to group all payment options together so customers better understand what's going on.

It also means 'OR' makes more sense which currently nobody seems to understand. So maybe something like this...

shopify-payment-checkout.png

Just seeing those familiar AMEX or VISA icons in the vicinity of the accelerated checkout buttons instantly helps customers understand what's going on.

Also, as a customer, I actually prefer choosing the payment method first because some of my cards have different addresses. So selecting the payment method first is more logical when it comes time for addresses.

Splitting payment options across different pages currently creates confusion. And after testing this myself, I understand why. It's convoluted and takes you back to the very start of checkout after 'Alternative Payment Methods' is tapped! At least it did for me on mobile.

This doesn't make much sense so it's unsurprising it creates confusion - right?

We send in feature requests and nothing. We post publicly and nothing. We're in partnership with you guys, can you at least acknowledge this is an increasing issue for a some of us? Something? A crumb? Anything?

Our customers are complaining of the same issue. I fixed it a couple of years ago but now Shopify appears to have done something to defeat the code that I wrote to hide the express checkout buttons.

Hello Shopify customer support! Are you there? These express checkout buttons are in the wrong place. We need the option to disable them.

Our customers are telling us that they can't order our products because they don't have the forms of payment represented by the express checkout buttons.

In other words, we are losing revenue and Shopify is losing revenue. Why won't you fix this and why won't you respond to our requests for support?

Shopify express payment options don't have to be completely disabled but we should be able to hide them from being the first thing customers see. It really causing a lot of customers to abandon check out as they don't realize they can pay with just a cc. These options should only be at the payment page right above or below the option of entering credit card information. I emailed shopify support and got a bs answer.

Dear Shopify Customer Support Team,

I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the Quick Payments Buttons in the checkout process on Shopify. As a user in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany, I have noticed that these buttons have an extremely negative impact on conversion rates for our sites.

It is frustrating to see that Shopify has not taken any action to address this issue promptly. It seems like such a simple fix, where a toggle button could easily turn the feature on or off. Yet, it is taking a long time for any updates or changes to be made.

As a loyal Shopify customer, I would like to see this issue resolved as soon as possible. I am hoping that Shopify can take immediate action to fix this problem and improve the user experience for all of us.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Sincerely,

Since Shopify is ignoring 100% of us (shocker)...here is the only half-a** solution I can come up with. Make a new logo...insert it at the checkout page.

The fact that Shopify is ignoring this issue and pretending that they don't understand the issue has me exploring other alternatives too.

As far as the new logo. It's a good idea. I will place the major cc icons right below the logo at checkout page.

Great tip!

Thanks for the inspiration! I did that too as a temporary solution. While chatting with support, I got another idea for those who are not using English as the main language. In the translation section, replace the word 'or' with a line that explains the other payment methods are in the next step. Not sure if it is possible to replace words if English is the main language.

Thank you for your suggestion as well. I added these major CC logos right below the logo on the checkout page. It's almost a perfect solution as it shows the Visa, MasterCard, etc logos right above the express checkout buttons. CC logos below, if anyone wants to add it to the bottom of their logo. Don't worry it won't affect the logo sitewide.

I am working with an App developer who has helped me rearrange the order of the final payment options and figured out a partial solution to removing Express Checkout.

The app removes Express Checkout if the customer is new and does not have the address autofill.  The app is:

https://apps.shopify.com/checkout-rules

Also, a lot of the time existing customers skip the Customer page and go straight to shipping.

Shopify will soon have a one page checkout.  I do not think they are working on a way for us to modify that page in any way besides the verbiage we can also adjust.
