How can I display color variants in a pop-up on my product page?

Hiya.

I've a product with 50 colour variants and would like to have some kind of popup to swatches of the colours available instead of just having the swatches visible on the product page directly.

I doesn't have to be a full pop up (opens in new window) but a table/tray that opens when clicking for the colour variant that displays the swatches.

This is what I have at the moment but would like to hide the swatches and show them on a drawer instead.

I know there's apps for this and would be willing to use one but my monthly costs are already going to be ridiculously high so I'm ideally looking for some DIY fixes.
